Frequently asked questions

Where does my gift go?

Every gift to City goes directly to our bursary fund (registered charity number 276251), supporting students who would otherwise be unable to study with us.

For further information and to hear direct testimony from former bursary recipients, please visit www.clsg.org.uk/support-us.

Why is City holding a Giving Day?

Educating students of conspicuous potential, regardless of financial circumstance or family background, is a central tenet of City and always has been.

We gave our first bursary a year after we opened and have subsequently offered financial support to thousands of students. Currently, we support 15% of the student body with a bursary, but we are still turning away talented girls for lack of funds.

City’s bursary fund is a true community effort with funding coming from generous alumnae, parents, staff, trusts, City livery companies, and the Corporation of London.

The government-assisted places scheme was closed in 1997, and funding from the Corporation dropped by two-thirds in 2022 – the overwhelming majority of gifts at City come from individuals within our community.

We are so grateful for this support – it is truly life-changing!

With your help, we can raise enough money to offer a full seven-year transformational bursary next year!

In 2024 we raised over £180,000 in our first Giving Day, a sum that allowed us to offer a new transformational bursary to a student who will join us in September 2025.

As we aim to raise funds towards a new award this year, your support will make an enormous impact on the culture of the school and the lived experience of everyone at City.

A new City bursary will sit alongside the 100 bursaries we currently offer, giving future students the chance to come to City and, according to one of our former recipients, ‘meet the best version of themselves.’

Why is a Giving Day different?

During the 36-hour matched funding challenge, we’re benefiting from some extraordinarily generous matched funding.

This means that every gift, up to a total of xxx, will be doubled by donations pledged by a group of generous bursary fund supporters.

Any gift you are able to make during this period will make a huge difference!

Is my donation secure?

Yes! All payments through our Giving Day site will be securely processed by Stripe:
www.stripe.com/gb/privacy

Can I see my gift on the Giving Day website?

Yes! If you’ve not chosen to make your gift anonymous, your gift and any additional message will appear on our donor wall.

Are there other ways to support City’s Giving Day?

Yes, please email development@clsg.org.uk or telephone 020 7847 5500 to discuss other ways to make a gift.

We would also be delighted if you could come to City to support one of our activities between 9 and 13 June – perhaps you could join our fun run on the 10th? Or attend one of our lessons for parents between 10 and 12 June?

Is there a minimum donation?

The minimum online donation is £1.

There’s no maximum donation, and no limit on the impact you can make with your gift!

Can Gift Aid be claimed on my donation?

Yes, as long as you have paid as much UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax as the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of your donations in this tax year, City can reclaim the basic tax rate (25%) on your gift, with no extra cost to you.

For example, a gift of £100 will be worth £125 before the addition of matched funding and subsequently doubled to £250!
